  • 2 medium Onions yellow or sweet onions are best
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil or butter for richer taste
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced, or omit for milder flavor
  • 1 tbsp Sugar helps with caramelization
  • 1 cup Beef Broth low-sodium or homemade is best
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Gruyère Cheese shredded, or Swiss or mozzarella for a milder flavor

Method
 

Cooking Steps
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and shape into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, and brown the meatballs for about 5-7 minutes until golden.
  3. In the same skillet, add more olive oil if needed, and cook thinly sliced onions over medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes until caramelized.
  4. Add minced garlic and sugar to the caramelized onions, stir for 1 minute, then add warm beef broth and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Carefully add the browned meatballs back to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven broiler. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the meatballs and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbling and golden.
