Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with unsalted butter or cooking spray.
- Melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then stir in 1 cup of brown sugar. Cook until bubbly and thick, then pour into the cake pan and layer sliced apples on top.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Cream together ½ cup of unsalted butter, ¾ cup of granulated sugar, and ¼ cup of brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, mixing well.
- Stir in ½ cup of sour cream and ⅓ cup of milk into the butter-sugar mixture. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients.
- Spread the batter over the apple slices in the cake pan, smoothing it out to cover all the apples and caramel.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Look for a golden brown color on top.
- Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Invert onto a serving plate to release the cake.
- Slice and serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes
For best results, use fresh ingredients and allow the cake to rest overnight for flavor enhancement. Consider customizing spices to elevate fall flavors.
