Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare chocolate cake by baking or purchasing it and let it cool completely on a wire rack for about 1 hour. Cut into cubes.
  2. In a chilled mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 3-5 minutes until firm peaks form.
  3. Layer chocolate cake cubes in a trifle dish followed by whipped cream and cherries. Repeat layers, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  4. Sprinkle chocolate shavings on top of the whipped cream layer and add a few extra cherries for garnish.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.
