Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease the baking dish.
  2. Combine chopped dates with boiling water and baking soda; let steep for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time.
  4. Fold in flour and vanilla, then mix in date mixture until smooth.
  5. Pour batter into prepared dish and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Melt butter for sauce in a saucepan, stir in brown sugar and cream, cook until thickened.
