- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
- Cook the breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat for 7–10 minutes until browned. Break into small crumbles and drain excess grease.
- Stir in the softened cream cheese until melted and blended smoothly, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Spread thawed hashbrowns evenly in the greased baking dish. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer the sausage and cream cheese mixture over the hashbrowns.
- Whisk together the eggs, milk or half-and-half, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper for about 2 minutes until frothy.
- Pour the egg mixture over the layers in the baking dish, then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until the eggs are set and cheese is golden brown.
- Let the casserole cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley if desired.
